what is "romantic"?

by amaletska @ 2007-08-19 - 10:51:01

Inspired by Redflaw :)

Redflaw tells me "you are truly romantic as a Slav you are..."
Thanks for your opinion, Redflaw, it's nice :)
Are all the Slavs romantic?

What's "romantic" anyway?
Wikipedia (Wiktionary):

Adjective
romantic

Concerned with, or conducive to, romance and love.
Their kiss started casually, but it slowly turned romantic.
Idealistic yet impractical.
Marry sighed, knowing her ideals were far too romantic to work in reality.
(Of art:) Passionate and imaginative rather than structured.

Synonyms
(concerned with romance): non-platonic

Derived terms
romantically

Is this it?
I invite you!
Let's define "romantic"!

I am going to catch the train, back in two days.
Have a good time :)

romantic is finding your inner poet and showering the person you love with loving feelings.

romantic is that mysterious persuasive urge to impress and share your feelings of love for another.

When I first met my husband he bought me a single red rose.
After that he bought me rose bushes 'because flowers die and plants don't.'
To me that was romantic. :)

hopeless??? oh goody how sad! :( :)
Here you go, Redflaw - we, the Slavs, are hopeless!! coz we are inherently romantic :) (at least this is what you made me think saying "you are truly romantic - as a Slav that you are". Oh, we just have this "romantic chip" installed at birth... Hee, hee, hee! (sinister giggling).

Athina, can you give us some clue, or an example, on "romantic = hopeless"? Be it a person or a situation etc.?
"Interesting... most interesting!" ;) (quoting Shakespeare in Love: the scene with his personal psychologist - oops, alchemist).

Actually! I still haven't tried to define "romantic" myself! What am I on about? I'll do it, now got to run!

I'll be back :)

Hi amaletska, I'm just being silly. Ask Phil, he knows me better. :) Well, I believe in romance, Romanticism, the hopeless romantics, and Romeo and Juliet. But my belief, as a young woman, that love works like magic resulted in a failed marriage sooo...

ah! so you said "romantic is hopeless" not in the sense of "useless" but rather "incurable"? Well... welcome to the club then! :)
After all my... erm... intense experiences I am glad to say I didn't turn cynical or distrustful (well, just a little healthy bit) but keep being the same hopeless romantic! I could have called them "failures" or "lost cases" but there were lots of truly beautiful things in each of those encounters... so I put them, like little gems, in my backpack - and off to the new horizons! ;)
